आखिरी मित्र
सब साथ छोड़ गए तो क्या,
सत्य अचल है,
कहो कहाँ मैंने कब कि
धर्म मार्ग सरल है।
धनधान्यमणि, अपितु,
हस्तिनापुर की शाह नही,
धर्म वंचित रह जाये,
ऐसे स्वर्ग की चाह नही।
जो चलें गये उनसे
नही कोई मुझे विरक्ति,
साथ है जो उनसे भी मुझे
नही कोई आसक्ति,
किन्तु, दुर्गम मार्गो, कटुपरिस्थियों में
जो साथ चला अमूल्य मित्र वही,
उस मित्र को छोड़ना भी
शचीश! मेरा धर्म नही।
रंगरूप वर्णजाति वैभव
मित्रता किसी से बाध्य नही,
मूक असहाय अमनुज तो क्या
प्रेम निश्छल तो आराध्य वही।
साम दाम दंड भेद,
नीतियाँ सब विफल हुई,
परीक्षक निरुत्तर,
परीक्षा वही भंग हुई।
मुस्कुरा देवेंद्र बोले- युधिष्ठिर!
पुत्र पिता के अनुरूप है।
तुम्हारा यह आखिरी मित्र, और कोई नही,
स्वयं धर्मराज का स्वरूप है।
Context:
Towards the end of Mahabharat (mahaprasthanic parv), pandavas decided to travel to mount Meru in order to get access to heaven. In the start of their journey, a dog joined them. Towards the end everyone died on the way and only remaining were Yudhisthir and the dog. Then Indra came and asked Yudhisthir to hop in his chariot to go to heaven. Yudhisthir asked Indra to let the dog enter the chariot also but Indra refused saying that a dog cannot enter into heaven. He tried to convince Yudhisthir to come alone and leave the dog. But Yudhisthir denied. He argued that dog is his friends and he cant leave his friend. This poem is the conversation between the two.
In the end, Indra smiled saying this was all a test and the dog is itself Dharmraj Yuma.
This poem is a metaphor saying that the last true friends of ours is the Dharma and we should never leave it.
